Morning walk.Forget that it is 25 degrees with a slight breeze; Maggie and I took a walk this morning after dropping Paul off at school. We walked over to the creek on the far side of the property. The creek doesn't have much water in it, but it stays open because of the little water falls and such creating moving water. I had hoped for some ducks on the creek, but it was for naught.
In any event, as we turned to head home, way off in the distance, I saw the back side of two White Tailed Deer as they "high tailed" it away. And I speculated as to the origin of the term "high tailed" and I wondered if it comes from the deer's habit of displaying their white tails in alarm. Because I'm studying the history of the English language this semester, and because it is overall, interesting, I have a book on the history of various English slang terms, but to "high tail" does not appear. I'll have to search some more.
