Happy little birdies ...Various from the farm
You'll see the little chicks are enjoying life to it's fullest. We moved them to new larger quarters today - a much larger stock tank. There are two Plymouth Barred Rocks that are bigger than the others. The guess is that they are roosters, which means they will probably be eaten, hence the name Paul gave them - "McNuggets." However, there's one particularly cheeky fellow that I'm contemplating keeping - Mr. McNugget himself in the center photo. I interviewed a woman today for an article in the Grass and Grain; she's the new president of American Agri-Women. She said keeping a rooster helps with predator problems. And once the little chicks move to the coop in a few weeks, we'll have coyotes, raccoons and the barn cats interested in them, for sure. Not to mention the Great Horned Owl that seems to like the nearby windbreak. Oh, and the Swanson's Hawk that The Man calls a chicken hawk, probably for a good reason.

So, would the one rooster be with the hens? Wouldn't that be an issue?
It's only an issue if you don't want fertilized eggs. People think hens won't lay eggs without a rooster, but that isn't right. They lay, you just end up with the possibility of fertilized eggs, but if you collect the eggs twice a day, you don't have little chicks.
