Happy chickens - unhappy MommyWell, the chickens are most happy to be foraging in the garden, but I'm not so happy because they don't eat the weeds, of course, they eat the plants! They have lopped off the tops of a couple of tomato plants and find the tops of the turnips to be particularly tasty. I asked The Man what could be done about this, and he's got Paul out there now, putting up what are called "panels" - sort of portable corrals - to keep the chickens out. There's nothing quite like driving stakes into the ground on a hot day for exercise for The Boy. Actually I'm going to have to call Paul something else - he's now 5 foot 6 inches tall and 125 pounds. His dad says that's about the size he was when he went into the service!
Paul starts Basketball camp right after Memorial Day, and there's a workout Memorial Day evening! Then, he has three times a week of weight training at, get this, 6 a.m. Then, weekly football skills training then in mid-July a football camp. He gets a couple of weeks off (whoppie more farming for The Boy) and then football training starts prior to school beginning. Between farming and working out, he ought to be in shape for the fall...

Oh, I'd be so mad if the little chicken were eating my garden! Aren't they supposed to eat grubs? Keep the bugs out, not eat the plants.
Paul isn't a boy anymore. Young man? His summer will be filled with farm work too. He's going to look like one of those corn fed Kansas boys soon!
It's just that the phrase The Man and The Boy has a certain ring to it...
