Cow Adventures ...
Those darned cows are so well, bovine and not real bright. Part of the frenzy of preparation for the wedding included couple pieces of new furniture, so I was home yesterday afternoon (thankfully) with the furnture delivery guys, when I see some cows booking it down the lane! I grab the phone, and tearfully beg Cousin Tom (when they people say the "salt of the earth" they mean Tom and his wife, Kay) to come and help, while I dash outside, still wearing my work clothes. By the time I get outside, the cows are down the lane and standing around on Flush Road (one of the busiest roads in the region.) Thankfully, I now see there are only two cows, and I actually manage to get them to go back down the lane. The furniture guys (who knows what furniture delivery will entail) try to help herd the cows into the pen, but they double back, and now they are on a full run, back down the lane! By the time I get back out on Flush Road, the cows are at the bridge, which I'm guessing is 100 yards away. People are honking, busses are trying to get to pick up school kids, and I'm running down the middle of the road in a dress! The cows don't cross the bridge, thank God, and I manage to get them to turn into the barrow ditch, and head back down toward the lane. Thankfully, a man has stopped and he's helping herd the cows. He looks like a competent farmer (overalls and all) and when he asks if I want him to help put them in the pen, I say "YES!" The poor, kindly fellow abandons his car at the side of the road, and jogs down with me after the stinking cows.
Then, I look up and Maggie has followed me out on the road! (So much for telling her to stay.) Now, I'm totally focused on the dog, who is dodging cars. I'm shouting "Maggie NO" over and over, and finally she get the picture and goes back down the lane, with the cows. I see Kay driving up, and I feel like the calvary has arrived! The furniture guys have stopped at the end of the lane, and that is probably why the cows go back down the lane. Kay gives them a ride back down, the nice man and I are jogging down the lane (he's much faster than I), and by the time I get there, Kay is helping herd the cows into the pen. Stinking cows.
About this time, Tom drives up. He'd been fairly far away. He give the good Samaritain, they apparently know each other, too, a ride back to his car, and then he checks the fence, and gets another wayward cow back behind the electric fence. The problem is with the electric fencing - deer hop over the fence and knock it down, apparently.
Just as the rodeo is over, Mike comes in. He's been off bringing back another trailer from Indiana. Well, at least it sort of looks like I can take care of things ... not really :) But I can call in the calvary!
