Wonderful homily at Mass today. Actually answered one of those "logic" questions that sometimes plague people, and has actually come up in my CCD class - 7th graders being prone to wanting to ask hard questions to stump the teacher. It is this: If we are to treat people as we want to be treated (golden rule), what about people who don't think much of themselves and don't treat themselves well? Christ says we are to "love others, as I have loved you." That takes it beyond what WE want, it takes the focus from US, to focus on Christ as our example. Gee, maybe I don't care if people treat me well, because I don't think I deserve good treatment, but that still means I am to behave in a Christ-like way toward another. It really changes the focus to where it should be - from ourselves to the needs of others. It is a tough shift to make.
