Red Bellied Woodpecker

Yellow Warbler

White-breasted Nuthatch

On Deriving Enjoyment from Little Things

On the north side of the house, by the bedroom, there's a windrow of trees, which makes for great wildlife habitat, particularly for the birds. It is also a logical place for birdfeeders, which were in place when I arrived, one more debt I owe The Man's mother. This morning, on my way by the windows that face the birdfeeders, I was struck by an unfamiliar bird. It was a woodpecker, on the ground, after the sunflower seeds. Once it realized I was observing it and taking it's photo, it flew away. (All these photos look odd because they are taken through the window screen.) In any event, it gave me pause. I love the birds, but how many times do I breeze through the bedroom and not even stop to look? So, I got the camera and spent some quality time with the birds.

I love the little nuthatches, because they go upside down on the tree trunks. We had them at the house in Divide all the time. Notice, the Red-Bellied Woodpecker does NOT have a red belly. Go figure. Not pictured are Blue Jays and Cardinals and the beautiful Baltimore Orioles and stunning Goldfinches (which have already been pictured on this blog.)

I've said this before, but it bears repeating: A person MUST have something they enjoy, something that brings them to a halt to enjoy the beauty of a sunset, the bird song, taking a walk or bike ride, gardening; or something like a hobby like Ellen's quilting, or reading, or auto mechanics even. It is best if it is affordable, of course, and for about $20 in sunflower seed, the little birds amply repay me a thousand times over.
