I call this one: Happy Rooster. He ought to be happy - he's a survivor.

This morning's sunrise.

The apricots in question
Fruit galore!
We had an "apricot emergency" Monday night - and had to pick apricots that very second when I got home from work. I've canned two quart jars of apricots, and five half-pints of jam and relatives have been over to pick apricots, and you can see there are still some left on the tree! It is endless ... next will be peaches, then pears. Saturday after work, we picked cherries, and Sunday, I put up 13 half pints of sour cherry jam. YUM!

On Monday night, also, a really nice fellow came by at The Man's invitation to tell us which are the best roosters and hens for the county fair. That is why I call the rooster pictured the happy survivor. We saved a Plymouth Barred Rock and a New Hampshire Red also. We are down to 30 chickens now. That means we've killed 19 roosters - or relatives have done so. So somethere around 1/3 of the chickens we got were roosters. (Math is not my strong suit.)
Good news for Hannah - the chicken fellow said that some of the hens are about ready to lay. She wants to collect eggs when she is here in July, and it looks like she will be able to do so. With 27 hens, there ought to be eggs ...

You're being over run by fruit and chickens! I can see how easy it would be to devote all of your time to all of the work on a farm. I'd happily help you can or whatever you need while we are there.

I'll tell Hannah the hens should be laying when she's there. I want to collect them too!

So, my friend Dan the math wiz, tells me that the chicken ratio is actually 39 percent. Once he told me how to estimate it, it made great sense! Thanks!
