A visit to Howell Living History Farm was the activity for my final vacation day on Thursday. We had a great time. Although the farming is supposed to be done the "old fashioned way" andd there were two young men with a team and a manure spreader, the farmer was using a tractor also due to the weekend events. He brought over the tractor, and Seth was more fascinated with it than just about anything else. The tour guide did point out that the chickens like fresh greens, so the kids picked up grass from along the fence and fed the chickens. There are several of these "living history" farms in New Jersey - Ellen takes the kids to Longstreet Farm and we've been there. Longstreet seems to be a bit more orgainzed in terms of the farming and house tours, etc., but this one had a nicer office and gift shop. Yesterday, Howell had a plowing contest, which I, myself would have enjoyed, but I doubted Paul would have, so I didn't even consider going. Afterward, we went on to nearby Lambertville, which is a very charming town. It's a bit tough to shop or anything with all the kids, but we walked around a bit, then had ice cream and headed home.
